Beloved Livingston Parish Crossing Guard Killed, Hit by Car While Working School Dismissal
Authorities say 64-year-old Darren Goudeau was charged with negligent homicide and DWI after the crash killed Wells, who served the parish for more than 40 years.
On Thursday afternoon, an allegedly impaired driver struck and killed crossing guard Katy Wells while she directed traffic along Louisiana Highway 16 near a Denham Springs elementary school.
Authorities arrested 64-year-old Darren Goudeau for the crash, charging him with negligent homicide and first-offense DWI; he remains in jail on a $101,000 bond.
Wells served as a crossing guard in Denham Springs for more than 40 years, working at Gray Creek Elementary and Seventh Ward schools as a dedicated staff member.
Parish President Randy Delatte honored her legacy, stating her "legacy of love and service will never be forgotten," while Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard called it "a very sad moment in this area."
Following the tragedy, resident Courtney Hatcher called for lowering the speed limit near the school to less than 45 miles per hour to improve safety for students walking daily.
