Trump's Tariff Threats: U.S. vs. BRICS Showdown
BRAZIL, JUL 18 – Belarus suggested integrating central bank digital currencies to ease payments among BRICS countries and cut reliance on the US dollar despite US tariff threats, officials said.
- During the 17th BRICS meeting held in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro, leaders focused on advancing a new system to facilitate cross-border financial transactions.
- This emphasis developed from ongoing attempts to decrease dependence on the US dollar, with Belarus suggesting the adoption of systems linked to central bank digital currencies once they are fully developed and prepared for implementation.
- Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on July 6 a 10% tariff on imports from BRICS nations and threatened a 50% tariff on Brazil starting in August for aligning with what he called Anti-American policies.
- Trump mentioned that he became aware of the coalition involving six BRICS nations and claimed to have taken strong actions against them. He cautioned that should this alliance become fully established, its existence would be short-lived.
- BRICS leaders rejected claims of anti-Americanism, continued advancing their payment system, and the tariff threats heightened tensions regarding the dollar's global reserve status.
