China launches long-term care insurance system to alleviate aging challenges
The plan aims to cover all citizens within three years and includes funding from employers, individuals, and government subsidies, with a contribution rate of 0.3%, officials said.
- On Wednesday, China's Central Committee and State Council issued guidelines to establish a nationwide long-term care insurance system within three years, providing nursing and medical support for individuals with sustained disabilities.
- The national rollout builds on pilot programs initiated in 2016 that improved quality of life for disabled individuals, addressing strain on social security as China's population over 60 grows rapidly.
- Funding will rely on a roughly 0.3% contribution rate from employers, individuals, and government subsidies, with rural and urban residents drawing from the same pool, Wang Wenjun, deputy head of the National Healthcare Security Administration, confirmed.
- "Bathing, haircuts, eating, dressing changes are no longer distant hopes for those confined to a sickbed, but rather bedside, accessible, attentive care," Wang said, easing family caregiving burdens and bolstering social safety nets.
- By 2035, the population over 60 is expected to reach 400 million, and authorities have vowed to "markedly narrow" the rural-urban healthcare gap by that year, standardizing care access across China.
