Advocates, providers react to B.C. pausing $10-a-day child-care program

As part of B.C.'s Budget 2026, announced Tuesday, new enrollment to the province's $10-a-day child-care program has been paused, bringing relief to some advocates.

It was a cornerstone of John Horgan’s election campaign in 2016: a promise to all parents in B.C. for access $10/day daycare. It’s a promise NDP Premier David Eby has continued, but nine years later that promise seems to have been but on pause. “It forces us to pause the things we want to do and focus on the things we have to do,” Finance Minister Brenda Bailey said at B.C.’s 2026 Budget announcement Tuesday.
