Amazon cuts 14,000 corporate jobs as spending on artificial intelligence accelerates
- On Tuesday, Amazon announced it will lay off 14,000 employees globally, a move multiple outlets described as one of its largest rounds of cuts.
- The company wrote that the cuts aim to make Amazon leaner and more efficient, citing overhiring during the COVID-19 pandemic and efficiency gains from AI, CEO Andy Jassy said.
- The majority of affected roles are in the warehouse workforce, and Amazon’s 14,000 layoffs represent roughly 4 of over 350,000 corporate employees.
- The company said it will prioritize affected employees for internal roles, giving them 90 days to find new jobs, with severance pay and additional benefits for those who do not secure positions.
- As the US's second-largest private employer, Amazon has more than 1.54 million employees and says it will continue hiring through 2026 while warning more cuts may follow.
