B.C. wildland firefighters chased from their camp by bears
- Approximately 160 firefighters had to evacuate their camp in British Columbia due to "persistent bear activity" that threatened their safety. The firefighters were battling the Downton Lake wildfire near Gold Bridge, which has burned 95 square kilometers of land and prompted evacuation orders.
- Scavenging bears have been a problem in other wildfire zones in British Columbia, with authorities collecting refuse and refrigerators to deter them. Earlier this month, a "fire tornado" was also observed at the Downton Lake wildfire.
- The firefighters have been relocated to Lillooet and are staying at Titqet First Nation and Lillooet municipality facilities. Conservation officers are assessing plans to safely return the firefighters to continue their battle against the fire, while the fire activity currently remains low due to recent rainfall.
