B.C. public service workers to rally in Vancouver after contract talks break down
About 16,000 public sector workers joined a downtown Vancouver rally to protest stalled contract talks over wage increases during the fifth week of strike action.
- On Wednesday, thousands of striking public sector workers will rally in downtown Vancouver, joined by members of other unions marching from the Vancouver Art Gallery to the Vancouver Convention Centre.
- After a brief resumption of talks on Monday, negotiators failed to reach agreement as the BC General Employees' Union, representing 34,000 workers, sought 8.25% wage increases over two years while the B.C. government offered five per cent.
- About 15,000 BCGEU members are engaged in job action, including more than 14,000 on strike at 166 sites with 79 picket lines and 82 provincial liquor stores.
- Pickets persist at about one-third of provincial liquor stores and distribution warehouses, while David Eby, Premier of British Columbia, and Brenda Bailey, B.C. Finance Minister, cite fiscal constraints and offer a five-per-cent increase with no timeline for talks.
- Finch warned `If they don't want to come to the bargaining table, we're going to bring the bargaining table to the legislature` as the B.C. legislature resumes Oct. 6 and the union plans to escalate after rejecting the province's five-per-cent offer.
