B.C. mountaineer missing in Italy is a seasoned survivalist, MLA says
Authorities suspended the search after a week as devices carried by experienced skyrunner Kalie McCrystal still showed no signal.
- On Tuesday, Italian authorities suspended the search for Canadian skyrunner Kalie McCrystal, missing in the Alps for a week after Monday's final helicopter flight on the 4,478-metre Matterhorn.
- Athletics Canada described the 38-year-old as "an experienced skyrunner and mountaineer, with many years of experience in technical and high-altitude mountain environments" while attempting a mountain-running record.
- Polish climbers last spotted McCrystal at around 4,250 metres on Sept. 1 after she posted a selfie at a refuge around 3,800 metres. Police are checking for signals from her devices.
- Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee called the suspension "very upsetting" for family and friends in Italy, who are "sitting by the phone" awaiting search updates.
- Friends and family maintain hope McCrystal is found alive, with Boultbee stating, "Nobody understands why there's been zero trace of Kalie," noting she is "not just your average hiker.
