B.C. Removes 'OK' Decal Requirement for EVs in HOV Lanes
BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 11 – The Ministry of Transportation and Transit expects to save $70,000 annually by removing decal requirements for electric vehicles using HOV lanes starting August 15, 2025.
- Effective August 15, 2025, owners of qualifying plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles in B.C. will be allowed to use high-occupancy vehicle lanes without displaying an OK decal.
- This update comes after the ministry assessed the current system to streamline the program that allows electric cars to use carpool lanes and to tackle the lengthy decal processing period of approximately eight weeks.
- The update eliminates decal wait times, allows access indicated solely by road signs, and extends HOV lane use to eligible out‑of‑province EVs and electric heavy-duty trucks where signage permits.
- Eliminating the decal requirement is expected to reduce the Ministry of Transportation and Transit’s administrative expenses by about $70,000 each year.
- Hydrogen-Powered vehicles must now meet the minimum occupant requirement to access HOV lanes, and the ministry will keep track of lane usage to maintain their efficiency for all authorized drivers.
