Conservatives Pledge to Scrap New Massey Tunnel, Build Bridge Instead
The pledges include a 10-lane bridge, free bus passes for 350,000 low-income seniors and 500 new RCMP officers.
Conservative Party of BC interim Leader Lorne Doerkson announced Thursday a plan to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane George Massey Bridge, claiming the project would reduce commute times by up to 30 minutes.
The current Massey Tunnel replacement project faces rising costs of about $8.5 billion, with the province having already spent $581 million on pre-construction work and utility relocation as of June.
International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 criticized the Conservative bridge proposal as "completely irresponsible," arguing it risks losing $3 billion in federal funding committed in July.
NDP Leader David Eby emphasized his party's commitment to transit and healthcare, pledging free bus passes for 350,000 low-income seniors and new hospital infrastructure in Surrey.
Elsewhere, CentreBC Leader Elenore Sturko unveiled a platform pledging 500 new RCMP officers and 60 additional Crown prosecutors, while the Greens proposed labour reforms strengthening collective bargaining.
