B.C. boosting community coroners' pay by 55%, job ad reveals
The province says the increase, the first in a decade, is meant to help fill about 40 vacancies amid staffing shortages.
- Effective June 1, the British Columbia government raised community coroners' hourly pay to $49.77 from $32, about a 55% increase marking the first wage adjustment in a decade.
- Current and former coroners had lobbied for years, complaining they worked 24 hours on-call without pay unless dispatched to a death scene, creating financial hardship and limiting applicant pools.
- Community coroners work "as and when required" with no guaranteed hours, benefits, or union membership. The Coroners Service noted "unpredictability of hours of work and resulting earnings" historically limited the applicant pool.
- The Coroners Service is recruiting to fill about 40 vacancies across the Okanagan, Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast, northern Vancouver Island, West Kootenays, and Sea-to-Sky region.
- BC Coroners Service spokesperson Holly Tally acknowledged staffing remote communities remains challenging, noting the wage increase is intended as an "enticement" for potential applicants.
