B.C. allows knowledge test for learner drivers to be taken online and at home

The province says the online test is the same 50-question exam and commercial-vehicle applicants must still test in person.

  • On Tuesday, British Columbia Attorney General Niki Sharma announced that learner drivers can now take their knowledge test online from home, modernizing the province's licensing services.
  • Sharma noted the online option provides increased choice for residents in rural and remote communities while freeing up in-person appointment space at ICBC offices for road tests.
  • Applicants must correctly answer 40 out of 50 questions using a computer with a camera; mobile devices are prohibited and commercial drivers must still test in person.
  • While the service became effective Tuesday, successful online applicants are still required to visit an ICBC office to confirm identity, take a photo, and complete a vision screening.
  • ICBC CEO Jason McDaniel described this digital transition as the first step in a modernization program that will include online renewals and replacements for driver's licences and British Columbia Identification Cards by 2027.
