BBC drops Drag Race UK after eight series
The broadcaster cited significant financial pressures as it ends the series after eight seasons and shifts future episodes and a new All Stars edition to streaming.
The BBC confirmed on Wednesday, September 9, that 'RuPaul's Drag Race UK' will leave the broadcaster after 11 series, moving to streaming platform WOW Presents Plus.
Citing 'significant financial pressures,' the BBC aims to reduce commissioning spending by £80 million for the 2027 to 2028 financial year, cancelling 'Drag Race UK' and the queer series 'I Kissed and I Kissed a Girl'.
While the eighth series continues airing on BBC Three and iPlayer, World of Wonder announced the first-ever 'RuPaul's Drag Race UK: All Stars' will premiere in autumn 2027 exclusively on WOW Presents Plus.
Subscribers will gain access to all eight past seasons of the main series plus three seasons of 'RuPaul's Drag Race UK vs The World,' with the platform describing the move as 'herstoric'.
World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato stated they remain 'steadfast in the values' that make the show a 'lifeline' for communities, vowing continued platform support.
The cancellation of "RuPaul's Drag Race UK" has sparked anger among fans and contestants, with some accusing the public service broadcaster of failing to reflect underrepresented groups.
The British talent show RuPaul’s Drag Race UK will not be renewed after the eighth season. The British broadcaster BBC has decided this. According to the broadcaster, this is due to ‘significant financial pressure’. The Director-General previously announced savings of £500 million over the coming years and that the cuts ‘require hard choices’.
