Lead in Ammunition to Be Restricted to Reduce Toxic Pollution
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 10 – The UK government will ban lead shot over 1% and bullets over 3% lead to prevent 7,000 tonnes of toxic lead contaminating ecosystems annually, with a three-year transition period.
- On 10 July 2025, the UK Government announced a ban on lead shot and bullets to protect wildlife and waterways, unveiled by Environment Minister Emma Hardy.
- Mounting evidence shows lead releases approximately 7,000 tonnes annually into ecosystems, poisoning wildlife and humans, prompting the HSE's December 2024 proposed restrictions.
- HSE evidence shows lead risks to over 1 million birds and 40,000 raptors, with non-lead alternatives now widely available and government engaging sectors for transition.
- Legislation is set for summer 2026 with a three-year transition, but BASC warns ammunition may not be available until 2029 due to supply challenges.
- Looking ahead, Hardy states the ban will help reverse pollution and rejuvenate Britain’s countryside and wildlife populations.
