Professor Shlomo Mashiach founded the in vitro fertilization (IVF) system at Assuta Hospital, which is currently responsible for about half of all fertility treatments in Israel. Mashiach was one of the founders of the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, and also served as the former director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sheba Hospital.
