On Thursday, World number 34 Nikola Bartunkova stunned compatriot Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-0 at the China Open in Beijing to reach her first WTA 1000 semifinal.
The 20-year-old Bartunkova sealed the victory in just 66 minutes, racing to a 5-0 lead in the opening set as the seventh-seeded opponent struggled to respond.
Bartunkova, who previously ousted second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, described the win as a "dream come true." She called Muchova "a great player and also a great human being."
Advancing to the semifinal, Bartunkova faces either French Open champion Mirra Andreeva or Ekaterina Alexandrova, who played their quarterfinal match later Thursday.
This victory marks the 20-year-old's third career win against a top 10-ranked opponent, positioning her as a serious contender in the Beijing tournament.
