She is not only the new Minister of Labour, but also replaces Saskia Esken as SPD party chairman. But who is Bärbel Bas private?
Bas grew up in the Ruhrpott, worked high, in the profession as well as in the party. She is regarded as down-to-earth and pragmatic – and unlike Lars Klingbeil, she enjoys the support of her party.
At the SPD party congress, Lars Klingbeil is elected party leader with a very bad result. He and his new co-chairman Bärbel Bas are now facing a balancing act.
The SPD has a new double lead: Minister of Finance Klingbeil remains, Labour Minister Bas joins. She received a much higher approval with 95 percent than the vice chancellor - who was recently heavily criticized.

Bärbel Bas was President of the Bundestag. She is currently Minister of Labour – and co-chairwoman of the SPD.
The social democrats elect the vice chancellor and labour minister to the top of the party. Klingbeil receives 64.9 percent of the votes, Bas 95 percent.
