Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby 20 years ago. It was his final victory.
Barbaro’s undefeated Derby run made him a fan favorite before a Preakness injury ended his career and led to euthanasia months later, officials said.
Barbaro captured the sport's imagination by winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby. While 151 horses have claimed that title, Barbaro transcended victory, becoming a household name for fans despite not winning the Triple Crown.
The Preakness ended his promising career when he suffered a severe injury. Jockey Edgar Prado's quick actions saved Barbaro's life on the track, preventing further immediate harm.
Fans followed his long recovery journey, but veterinarians ultimately euthanized the champion months later. The Jacksons, his owning family, later commissioned a permanent memorial to honor him.
A sculpture unveiled at Churchill Downs shows Barbaro all four feet off the ground, Chris Goodlett with the Kentucky Derby Museum noted. "It shows Barbaro all four feet off the ground," Goodlett said of the tribute.
At that point, the Triple Crown drought was 28 years long, making fans excited about a potential winner. "So the fact that he was undefeated, the fact that he won the Derby so easily, had people excited about a potential Triple Crown winner," Goodlett said.
