Barack & Michelle Obama Will End Their Movie & TV Partnership With Netflix This Year
The Obamas’ company will keep working on Netflix projects while shopping new film and TV ideas to multiple studios and streamers.
- President Barack Obama announced Saturday in Philadelphia that Higher Ground Productions will become independent when its Netflix first-look deal expires later this year.
- The move concludes an eight-year partnership that began in 2018 as an exclusive deal and transitioned to a first-look arrangement in 2024, during which Higher Ground produced 24 projects across film, television, and documentaries.
- Collectively, these projects earned 3 Oscar nominations with one win, 12 Emmy nominations, and 6 victories, including the Academy Award-winning documentary American Factory and the thriller Leave the World Behind, which ranked #8 on Netflix's most-watched English-language films.
- While continuing to collaborate with Netflix on existing projects, Higher Ground has begun testing a multi-studio model by setting up productions at HBO, Apple, Amazon, FX, Disney, 20th Century Studios, and YouTube.
- Embracing independence allows the company to pursue creative freedom across multiple partners, a shift underscored by Higher Ground's recent Broadway expansion, including the April 18 revival of Proof starring Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle.
