Banned driver who stole Maserati and killed pensioner in crash jailed
Fraser Garden admitted causing death by dangerous driving after stealing a high-powered Maserati and driving at 85mph through a residential area.
On Friday, Fraser Garden was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh for causing John Bell's death by dangerous driving.
Garden, a disqualified driver, stole a Maserati on April 13 from West End Garage and drove at 85mph in a 30mph zone while under the influence of cocaine.
The vehicle struck Bell in his own garden in Broughty Ferry near Dundee, pinning him against a house wall and causing what officials described as "non-survivable injuries."
Judge Lord Braid imposed a lifetime driving ban of more than 56 years, noting that Garden had 90 previous convictions and demonstrated "wicked disregard for the lives of others."
Bell, a retired taxi driver who worked nearly 30 years before retiring in 2020, left behind three children, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; his family described a "void that will never be filled.
