Attackers ambush police in Nigeria's Zamfara, killing at least eight, officials say
Attackers killed five police officers and three vigilantes, rescued seven others and seized five AK-47 rifles, officials said.
On Tuesday, attackers ambushed a police convoy in Nigeria's northwestern Zamfara State, killing at least eight security personnel in a region where kidnappings and attacks are common.
The officers were traveling in a bus towards Gusau, the state capital, to provide security for the APC primary election for the Zamfara North Senatorial District in the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.
Vigilante commandant Lawal Haruna and Abubakar Isa of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard reported the attackers struck near Gidan-Giye village, destroying a 15-seater bus and seizing five AK-47 rifles.
Police later recovered the bodies of five officers, rescued seven others, and evacuated two wounded officers for treatment, according to an official police statement.
A police officer told Reuters that attackers also abducted additional personnel, reflecting the persistent danger posed by bandits in Nigeria's northwestern region.
Eight police officers were killed, five were kidnapped and three others were injured when they were ambushed by bandits near the village of Gintan Kano, in northwestern Nigeria.
