Europe Faces Stray Ukrainian Drones as Kyiv Targets Russian Oil Exports
Baltic officials say more than 60 drones were shot down in one attack as stray Ukrainian aircraft trigger airspace violations and political fallout.
On Wednesday, Lithuanians sought shelter in underground car parks in Vilnius during an air raid alert as authorities warned of unidentified drone activity in neighboring Belarus, marking the first such alert in a NATO capital.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Budrys stated on Tuesday that Russia is "deliberately" redirecting Ukrainian drones into Baltic airspace using electronic interference; jamming and spoofing tactics force the drones off course toward NATO territory.
Increasing incursions have prompted Baltic ministers to chastise Ukraine, with violations contributing to the Latvian government's collapse in May; a Romanian fighter jet shot down a Ukrainian drone over southern Estonia on May 19.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte praised the alliance's "calm, decisive and proportionate response" on Tuesday, while Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, the SVR, claimed without evidence that Ukraine is launching attacks from Baltic territory.
Defending against such threats requires solving complex technological and bureaucratic problems, as Colonel Janno Mark of the Estonian Defense Forces said, "There is no one solution against every type of drone.
