ONTARIO, CANADA, AUG 8 – Fifty-two people fell ill and nine were hospitalized after consuming pistachio baklava linked to a salmonella outbreak, officials said.
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recalled Andalos brand baklava pastries containing pistachios due to salmonella concerns on August 8, 2025.
- The recall followed investigations triggered by a foodborne illness outbreak linked to contaminated pistachios and related baked goods sold mainly in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec.
- The recalled pastries were primarily sold at a Montreal bakery and distributed online between June 25 and July 26 before customers received them.
- Health officials in Canada have confirmed 52 reported illnesses and nine hospital admissions related to the consumption of contaminated pistachios and pistachio-containing baked goods, noting that several recent recalls have involved this nut.
- The outbreak highlights salmonella risks, which can cause fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and serious infections especially in vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
