Bahamian music group "still shocked" after bandmates killed in small plane crash
Bahamian investigators are probing the cause as Flamingo Air suspends flights after a separate plane fire and a fatal crash killed all 10 onboard.
On Friday, a Flamingo Air plane crashed in North Andros, The Bahamas, killing all 10 people on board during a flight from Lynden Pindling International Airport that typically takes under 20 minutes.
Among the victims were five members of Da Pond Band, including Giovanni McKenzie and Mateo Winder, alongside Melvin Henfield, known as DJ Fresh, and 16-year-old Nicholas Oliver Jr.
Delayed by two hours, the flight was supposed to be a charter exclusive to performers, but the pilot waited on the tarmac to fill more seats, vocalist Shenia Roberts said.
Flamingo Air suspended all flights following the crash and a separate plane fire in Nassau, as the Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority launched an investigation.
Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis expressed condolences in a statement, writing he is "praying for the families who are now facing unbearable grief" as the investigation proceeds.
