21 birds have been infected with avian influenza in Austria this year. Up to now, the cases have been limited to wild birds in Carinthia, Upper Austria and Lower Austria.
After the occurrence of the first cases of avian influenza, an "increased risk" will apply in Austria from Monday. The Ministry of Health issued the corresponding announcement on Friday. The aim of the measure is to prevent the contact between wild birds and domestic poultry "and thus prevent the transmission of avian influenza into domestic populations".
