Australian Inflation Cools, Cutting Odds of Another RBA Hike
Core inflation stayed at 3.6% and markets cut bets on an August rate hike, though housing and services costs remained elevated.
On Wednesday, Australian government data showed consumer price inflation cooled in the June quarter, with the annual trimmed mean gauge rising 3.6% versus the 3.7% forecast.
The Reserve Bank of Australia raised the key rate three times this year to 4.35% to combat inflation; RBA Governor Michele Bullock acknowledged on Tuesday the board grows increasingly concerned the longer inflation remains outside its target.
Traders reacted sharply, slashing bets on another rate hike this year to about 50% from more than 90% previously, while annual inflation in June was primarily driven by a 6.8% increase in housing costs.
The Australian dollar fell to $0.6949 as bond yields declined; AMP Economist My Bui said the print was "softer than we expected and it was pretty nice to see some hot services categories ticking down in June."
RBA Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter is scheduled to hold a fireside chat on Thursday morning, the final event before the board meets on August 11, when it releases updated quarterly forecasts.
