Aussie Formula 1 Champion Alan Jones Dies Aged 80
He won the 1980 Formula 1 title for Williams by 13 points and later became a familiar broadcaster for Australian fans.
Australian Formula 1 legend Alan Jones has died at 80, passing away three days after his birthday following a short battle with illness.
Jones became only the second Australian to win the title after Sir Jack Brabham, triumphing for Williams in 1980 and defeating Brazilian Nelson Piquet by 13 points.
Born in Melbourne, Jones made his debut at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix; his maiden victory at the Austrian Grand Prix saw organizers play 'Happy Birthday to You' on the podium.
Following his 1986 retirement, Jones became the face of Formula 1 in Australia, anchoring Nine's broadcasts alongside the late Darryl Eastlake for years.
Jones is survived by his wife Amanda and twins Zara and Jack, along with daughter Camilla and son Christian, after receiving a cancer diagnosis only weeks ago.
