Australia Builds Lead Against South Africa in First Test, 174-4 at Lunch on Day Four
Scott Boland’s two quick wickets justified Australia’s all-pace attack and left South Africa struggling after rain and bad light slowed the Test.
On Monday, South Africa reached 97-5 at stumps on day two of the second cricket test in Gqeberha, as rain and Australian bowler Scott Boland's dominant spell limited the hosts' scoring.
Persistent rain on Sunday and Monday forced teams to wait until afternoon to resume play, following South Africa's 214-run defeat in the first Test in Durban last week.
Captain Temba Bavuma provided resistance with an unbeaten 41 from 108 balls, while Boland secured 4-31 from 14 overs, continuing to torment South Africa's struggling batting lineup.
Debutants Marques Ackerman and Matthew Breetzke fell early to Australia's pace attack, though Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton stabilized the Proteas with a 52-run fifth-wicket partnership.
Play resumes on Tuesday with improved weather forecast for the remaining three days, as Australia seeks to wrap up the three-match series while South Africa attempts recovery.
