Aubrey ISD Names New Elementary School After Beloved Retired Janitor

The district said Hampton’s 39 years of service included mentoring students, buying supplies and helping at school events.

  • On Wednesday, the Aubrey Independent School District Board voted to name its newest campus Marilyn Hampton Elementary, honoring the 39-year career of Marilyn Hampton.
  • Superintendent Shannon Saylor lauded Hampton as a mentor, noting she supported students beyond her custodial duties by providing supplies and tutoring throughout her 39 years of service.
  • During the board meeting, District officials surprised Hampton by asking her to roll out a red carpet, a task she performed throughout her career. When she unrolled it, she discovered her name printed across it.
  • "Whoever thought a janitor would have a school named after them," Hampton said, expressing disbelief at the recognition. "It's an honor that I never thought in my lifetime I would have seen."
  • The Marilyn Hampton Elementary School is scheduled to open in August next year, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned once construction is complete and the building is ready for students.
