DC to Receive $1.2M in Settlement that Bans Drug Companies From Marketing in the City
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, JUL 15 – The settlement bans opioid marketing and limits oxycodone strength while allocating $1.2 million to D.C. to address opioid overdose deaths, which totaled 1,740 from 2021 to 2024.
- In Washington, D.C., District of Columbia Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb announced that eight opioid drug manufacturers will pay approximately $1.2 million as part of a nationwide settlement resolving allegations they contributed to the opioid crisis.
- The Office of the Attorney General said it has secured nearly $104 million from prior settlements, and Brian L. Schwalb noted that 1,740 residents died from opioid overdoses between 2021 and 2024.
- Under the settlement, seven companies are prohibited from marketing opioids in D.C. and from selling any pill containing more than 40 milligrams of oxycodone, while Indivior is barred from manufacturing or selling opioid products for the next ten years.
- The settlement delivers $720 million to states and territories nationwide, and Brian L. Schwalb wrote on X: `We will not stop until every corporation that illegally profited from the opioid crisis is held accountable`.
- In the first quarter of 2025, fatal opioid overdoses fell 33% year-to-date to 61 deaths, guided by the District’s Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission established in 2022.
