Lawsuits Against Boeing, Alaska Airlines over Door Plug Blowout Accelerate
UNITED STATES, JUL 7 – The $1 billion lawsuit was dismissed after Boeing was found responsible for missing bolts causing the door plug to fail mid-flight, leading to an emergency landing and safety inspections.
- In Portland, the district court dismissed the $1 billion lawsuit by three Oregon passengers against Alaska Airlines and Boeing, which had settled out of court earlier this month.
- The National Transportation Safety Board found four bolts missing from the door plug, and it blamed Boeing’s inadequate training, guidance and oversight for the failure.
- As the door plug detached mid-flight, debris was scattered outside the cabin, and several passengers reported minor injuries.
- Following the settlement, Alaska Airlines grounded more than 60 Max 9 jets for safety inspections, and NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy called the incident `preventable`.
- Meanwhile, three additional lawsuits are scheduled for trial next year, highlighting ongoing concerns over Boeing’s safety, financial and workforce challenges.
