Attackers board a ship off the coast of Somalia after firing rocket-propelled grenades
The EU's counter-piracy mission responded after Somali pirates attacked a Malta-flagged tanker and seized fishing vessels, amid a rise in piracy incidents this year, officials said.
- The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency warned ships of an attack by a small craft firing rockets and small arms at a vessel southeast of Eyl, Somalia, and boarding the vessel.
- Maritime security firms reported that a Malta-flagged tanker had been boarded by suspected Somali pirates who had seized an Iranian fishing boat for use as a base of operations.
- The attacked tanker's crew of 24 locked themselves in the citadel for safety during the attack.
