Mexico Official: Teotihuacán Gunman Carried Material Related to US Mass Shooting
Authorities said the gunman planned the attack alone and carried documents referencing the 1999 Columbine massacre, while 13 people were injured.
- On Monday, 27-year-old Julio César Jasso Ramírez opened fire atop the Pyramid of the Moon at the Teotihuacán archaeological site, killing one Canadian tourist and injuring 13 others before taking his own life.
- Investigators discovered Jasso Ramírez carried literature and documents referencing the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, suggesting his actions were influenced by foreign incidents rather than spontaneous. Attorney General José Luis Cervantes Martínez stated, "This act was not spontaneous."
- Thirteen victims, ranging from six to 61 years old, were hospitalized following the incident. Jasso Ramírez fired 14 times at tourists and security forces before National Guard members scaled the pyramid and cornered him.
- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the archaeological site will reopen on Wednesday with reinforced security, including metal detectors at entrances. Sheinbaum vowed to guarantee safety during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off June 11 in Mexico City.
- Authorities characterized the suspect as having psychological problems and being influenced by foreign incidents, President Sheinbaum said. Mexico's Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch implemented digital "cyber patrols" at major tourist destinations to prevent future threats.
