A gay belly dancer turns grief into joy after fatal attack on Berlin’s Pride festival
On Saturday, a van ramming and stabbing near Berlin's Pride festival left one person dead and nearly 30 wounded, which authorities classified as an extremist terror attack.
Officials are investigating how suspect Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German-born citizen with Lebanese roots, moved freely in Germany despite a prior conviction linked to the Islamic State group.
Haidar Darwish, a Syrian artist known as The Darvish, performed Sunday at Museum Island with Queens Against Borders, alongside Egyptian belly dancer Aleya and Nigerian drag performer Countess Sasha Seduction.
Addressing the crowd Sunday night, Darwish said, "We are pushing through, and we are here specifically today, myself and my artists, to show up and be visible," emphasizing the need for presence.
Performers transformed the somber atmosphere into celebration as Darwish noted the LGBTQ community chose to "put grief into joy" despite exhaustion from constant struggle for visibility.
