Athletics designated hitter Brent Rooker out for the season after left knee surgery
The Athletics said Rooker is expected to be ready for spring training next year after the procedure.
On Friday, Athletics designated hitter and outfielder Brent Rooker underwent season-ending left knee surgery, marking a significant loss of a leader both on and off the field for the club.
Rooker's season proved injury-plagued following his 162-game campaign last year; he missed 15 games in April with a strained right oblique muscle and received a cortisone shot last month for a knee bone bruise.
A two-time All-Star, Rooker batted.200 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs over 48 games this season while playing on a five-year, $60 million contract.
Dr. Tim McAdams and Dr. Mike Freehill performed the procedure at Stanford Orthopedic Hospital in Redwood City, completing a debridement of Rooker's articular cartilage tear and removing loose bodies.
Team officials expect Rooker to return in time for the start of spring training next year, providing a recovery timeline for the injured outfielder.
