Athletics call up MLB top prospect amid series with Mariners
Jump leads the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts and is expected to debut after a seven-inning shutout earned him pitcher of the week honors.
On Tuesday, the Athletics promoted pitcher Gage Jump to the major leagues for his MLB debut as starter Aaron Civale faces an injured list move following a significant velocity drop in Monday's loss to Seattle.
Civale was pulled after four innings Monday with manager Mark Kotsay noting an issue with his right shoulder or lat; his fastball velocity averaged 88.3 mph, more than 3 mph below his 2026 season average.
Jump struck out 56 batters in 38 innings at Triple-A Las Vegas, leading the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts, and struck out 15 over 11.0 scoreless innings across his final two starts, including seven shutout innings against Albuquerque on Wednesday.
Civale, 5-2 this season with a 4.20 ERA, said he is "working through" his injury and seeking clarity on treatment; the Athletics, 27-27 but leading the American League West, signal commitment with Jump's promotion.
The former Louisiana State University product was selected 73rd overall in the 2024 draft and compiled a 3.58 ERA with 187 strikeouts across 150.2 minor league innings, becoming the 15th former Tiger on an MLB roster alongside Paul Skenes and Aaron Nola.
