At least 9 dead, 10 injured in Mexico highway crash; 4 Americans among victims

  • On Sunday, a multi-vehicle accident near Hostotipaquillo in Mexico left 10 people dead, including two minors, and 10 others injured after a cargo truck crashed into vehicles responding to an earlier collision.
  • As road crews responded to an earlier crash involving two trucks, a third truck plowed into stationary vehicles, causing "an accident of greater magnitude," the Nayarit Civil Protection agency said.
  • Two cargo trucks and three other vehicles caught fire, while a Mexican National Guard patrol truck was also damaged. Two National Guard officers were reported in serious condition and shifted to Magdalena Hospital in Guadalajara.
  • Jalisco Civil Protection stated that "four patients in minor condition," all US citizens, were transferred to the Arboledas Hospital in Guadalajara by private ambulance from the highway.
  • The driver of the truck was detained by the National Guard, as authorities investigate the collision. Fatal road accidents involving trucks are relatively common in Mexico, often linked to poor vehicle maintenance or driver fatigue.
