AT&T Makes $19 Billion Commitment to Bring High-Speed Connectivity to California
AT&T says the upgrade will bring fiber to more than 4 million additional homes and businesses and add 1,200 new cell sites statewide.
- On Wednesday, AT&T announced a $19 billion investment in California's fiber and wireless networks through 2030, with plans to begin discontinuing copper-based phone services in parts of the state on or after June 1, 2027.
- AT&T state president Susan Santana said aging copper networks cannot support modern connectivity needs and are increasingly unreliable, especially as copper theft remains a prevalent issue across the state.
- The initiative will bring fiber to 4 million additional households and businesses while adding more than 1,200 new cell sites by 2030, saving 300 million kilowatt-hours annually—equivalent to avoiding emissions from approximately 17 million gallons of gasoline.
- To ensure continuity, AT&T will offer AT&T Phone Advanced service for free for 3 months to traditional home phone users in affected areas, guaranteeing no loss of voice or 911 emergency services during the transition.
- Community outreach efforts include opening 6 additional Connected Learning Centers and hosting more than 30 digital literacy workshops this year, while the company hires hundreds of technicians to support fiber deployment and long-term workforce continuity.
