ASU hires new men's hockey head coach, reaches agreement to part ways with previous head coach
- On Thursday, Arizona State University parted ways with head coach Greg Powers and hired former NHL coach Dave Hakstol to lead the Sun Devil hockey program immediately.
- Powers had been on administrative leave since September 30 following the August 20 collapse of 21-year-old defenseman Matthew Mayich during an outdoor, "military-style" conditioning workout.
- The Mayich family and teammates accused the university of "whitewashing" events, alleging players "received no water" during the session and demanding a full independent investigation.
- Hakstol, formerly an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche, will be joined by new assistant coach Matt Greene for the team's weekend series against UMass-Lowell on Friday and Saturday.
- Former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales continues an independent review, though the Mayich family maintains the coaching change "should not limit his cooperation or anyone else's" in the investigation.
