Aston Villa win Europa League to claim first major trophy in 30 years
Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers scored as Villa sealed a 2-0 halftime lead and Unai Emery won a fifth Europa League title.
On Wednesday, Aston Villa defeated Freiburg at Besiktas Park to win the Europa League final, securing their first major trophy in 30 years and first European title since 1982.
Manager Unai Emery secured a record-extending fifth Europa League title, adding to previous triumphs with Sevilla in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and with Villarreal in 2021.
A low volley from Youri Tielemans opened the scoring, and eight minutes later Emi Buendia curled in a second. Morgan Rogers added a third goal after the interval.
Prince William, 54, attended the match in Istanbul to celebrate the victory, delivering on his October 2022 promise to bring silverware to Villa after joining the ownership group.
Already assured of a place in next season's Champions League, Villa sit fourth in the Premier League table ahead of their final domestic game against Manchester City on Sunday.
Aston Villas Topstars are too much for SC Freiburg. While Unai Emery is expanding its unique record record record, waiting for a title continues in Breisgau. Now a change is likely to occur – at least in the goal.
The big European Cup dream of SC Freiburg has burst. In the final game of the Europa League, the bad outsider had to take a clear 0:3 against the overpowering favorite Aston Villa.
