Asian Para Games Open in Japan with Participation From All 45 Nations
Around 4,000 athletes and officials are set to compete in 18 sports, with wheelchair rugby returning and some events serving as Paralympic qualifiers.
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games opened Sunday in Nagoya with an opening ceremony, following a torch relay that began Oct. 10 in Okazaki. The event features around 4,000 athletes and officials from a record 45 countries.
These games mark the fifth edition since the event's 2010 launch in Guangzhou, China. The forerunner, the Far East and South Pacific Games, was first held in Oita Prefecture in 1975.
Japan is fielding about 280 athletes across 18 sports, contested primarily in Aichi Prefecture. Local stars Tokito Oda and Yui Kamiji, who hails from Aichi, are among the biggest attractions.
Events including shooting serve as qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics. The men's and women's wheelchair tennis singles champions will earn direct Paralympic qualification.
Organizers aim to raise awareness of people with disabilities following the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics. These games follow the Asian Games, in which Japan achieved its best-ever result of 269 medals, including 83 golds.
