Asian Games 2026 medal tally: India opens medal hunt with a silver in shooting; check key results
On Sunday, Elavenil Valarivan secured India's first individual silver in the Women's 10m Air Rifle at the Asian Games, finishing 0.6 points behind Japan's Taichi Hinata after leading until the final two shots.
Three years ago in Hangzhou, India's shooters collected medals by the dozen while Elavenil was not on the team; coach Neha Chavan recalls 2022 and 2023 as the toughest stretch when kidney stones derailed her Olympic qualification.
Inside the final hall, Elavenil started with a perfect 10.9 shot and consistently found mid-to-high 10s until the 18th shot, when she shot 10.1 and finished on 252.4, allowing Hinata to overtake her for gold.
Earlier that day, India clinched silver in the team event with Elavenil, Sonam Maskar, and Vidarsa Vinod, with Elavenil crediting the medal to combined team effort and her coaches' support throughout training sessions.
Eight years after her 2018 Asian Games debut at age 18, Elavenil has competed in two Olympics and World Cups; she plans to recover before focusing on world championships, having learned patience and consistency through years without medals.
