As the World Cup approaches, Sotheby's is set to auction Pele's jersey
The match-worn number 10 shirt was gifted to teammate Dida after Brazil’s 5-2 win over Sweden and later entered museum and private collections.
- On Tuesday, Sotheby's announced that the match-worn number 10 jersey belonging to the late Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, from the 1958 World Cup final will be auctioned online between June 29 and July 16.
- Pelé was 17 years old when he scored twice in Brazil's 5-2 victory against Sweden at the Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm, becoming the youngest player ever to score in a World Cup final.
- After the final, the Brazilian legend gifted the handmade shirt to his roommate and teammate, Dida; the jersey remained with Dida's family for decades before being housed in a museum and eventually sold to an anonymous owner in 2004.
- "This is the garment worn by one of the greatest footballers in history on the night his reign began," said Brahm Wachter, head of Sotheby's modern collectables, in a statement about the auction.
- Pelé won his third World Cup title in 1970 in Mexico, where the Azteca Stadium will host the opening game of this year's World Cup between Mexico and South Africa.
