When the Totten glacier breaks off on the coast of Antarctica and floats in the ocean, it is fragmented into icebergs about 20 times the size of an aircraft carrier. Below this area, a group of researchers discovered a large subglacial river flowing below the ice. Studies were published earlier this year in the journal Nature Communications and are the result of 20 years of work to map the continent hidden under the ice sheets of Antarctica.
