- Newsom had warned the planned firing could pose hazards to motorists, but the Marines said the exercise would occur on approved training ranges and follow safety protocols.
- At 1:46 p.m., the round was fired from White's Beach about three-quarters of a mile south of Las Pulgas Road; the exercise with approximately 60 155 mm shells was halted and the highway reopened at 2:20 p.m.
- The closure he ordered Saturday caused significant backups on I-5, which is used by approximately 80,000 people daily, and Governor Gavin Newsom called the White House `reckless` while the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force said it is investigating.
- CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado called live-fire near an active freeway highly uncommon, and the Marines canceled further firing after an active-duty Marine said a fuze fault likely caused the mishap.
