Accused in Keralam Synagogue Arson Case Slapped with UAPA, Larger Conspiracy Suspected: Police
Police suspect a larger conspiracy and say the accused received cryptocurrency payments and was linked to three arson incidents in Ernakulam district.
- On Friday, Kochi City police invoked the Unlawful Activities Act against Ebin Paul for an alleged arson attack on the 800-year-old Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in Ernakulam, Keralam.
- Police arrested Paul after he allegedly set fire to a plant nursery in front of the synagogue around 2.40 a.m. on October 12, 2026, prompting a search of his Puthencruz residence.
- Investigators suspect a larger conspiracy involving instructions from other persons; police recovered videos of Paul conducting reconnaissance and practicing the crime, along with cryptocurrency payments to him.
- District Police Chief Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar charged Paul under Sections 15 and 18 of the anti-terror law, revealing the accused was involved in three separate arson incidents across Ernakulam.
- Officials are proposing that the State Anti-Terror Squad lead the investigation, with the National Investigation Agency potentially assuming control of the probe given the sensitive nature of the target.
