Army chief vows ‘no let-up’ ops following deadly Lanao ambush
Four soldiers were killed and one wounded in a targeted ambush by Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute militants during a peacebuilding mission, officials said.
- On January 23, the Philippine Army said four soldiers were killed and one wounded during a humanitarian mission as their vehicle crossed a shallow river in Purok 1, Barangay Lininding, Munai, Lanao del Norte.
- Suspected Dawlah Islamiyah–Maute Group members, who have not joined WestMinCom's reconciliation program, carried out the ambush, which the Army said appeared retaliatory against local communities supporting government programs.
- Traveling non-uniformed to a secluded peacebuilding engagement in a Blue Toyota Avanza, the soldiers were ambushed by assailants who opened fire with high-powered weapons and fled.
- Gen. Donald Gumiran, commander of Western Mindanao Command , said `This is a very sad day for us` and vowed intensified, coordinated operations with local government units while the Philippine National Police assists pursuit efforts.
- The 1st Civil-Military Operations Battalion, known for community service and reintegration, said the ambush undermines peacebuilding and reintegration programs in the 1st Infantry Division area.
