Biathletes Return to Familiar Terrain as Classic Italian Venue Hosts Olympic Competition
Biathlon returns to the South Tyrol Arena with daytime races and an expected 200,000 fans attending, providing athletes with familiar courses and supportive crowds.
- On Sunday, biathlon races begin at the Südtirol Arena in Anterselva, running in the afternoon as on the international circuit.
- Organizers chose the established Südtirol Arena in Anterselva to give athletes course familiarity and avoid the last three Olympics' night-lit, purpose-built venues.
- The Anterselva biathlon range sits at 5,200 feet and holds 19,000 spectators, with over 100,000 tickets sold and close to 200,000 projected, Cobb said.
- Armin Auchentaller, head coach of the U.S. biathlon team, said large, loud crowds add excitement and motivation, creating an inspiring atmosphere for competitors.
- Despite advantages, the Südtirol Arena's isolation and challenging trails mean some athletes like Maxime Germain may miss opening ceremonies and face travel tradeoffs, organizers said.
