Armed group in Nigeria kills at least 20 people and exchanges gunfire with police
Police said the attackers killed civilians and exchanged fire with officers, as authorities reported no arrests after the assault.
On Sunday, gunmen killed at least 20 people in the Kawel community of Bokkos, Plateau State, police said. Officers quickly arrived and exchanged gunfire with the assailants, forcing them to retreat.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack in a region experiencing recurring violence. Armed gangs remain active across north-central and northwest Nigeria, creating persistent security threats.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang instructed government emergency and humanitarian agencies to provide relief to victims and families. Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo said victims' remains were released to families for burial as requested.
This incident mirrors a nighttime attack in March that killed 20 people in the Gari, Waye community of Plateau State, demonstrating the recurrence of mass violence in the region.
According to the United Nations, an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria has killed thousands and displaced millions over the years, underscoring broader security challenges affecting the country.
