Apple Patches Ancient iOS Versions to Keep iMessage, FaceTime, Other Services Working

Apple extended a critical security certificate in iOS 12.5.8 to maintain iMessage, FaceTime, and activation support on older devices beyond January 2027.

  • Apple released iOS 12.5.8 and related updates for legacy devices including iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch .
  • According to Apple’s release notes, the update renews a critical certificate in iOS 12.5.8 and iPadOS 12.5.8 so iMessage, FaceTime and device activation continue working after January 2027.
  • Apple says iOS 12.5.8 is available for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPod touch, while parallel patches include iOS 15.8.6 and iOS 16.7.13 for newer models.
  • No feature changes were shipped, the releases preserve basic functionality by updating a certificate, and Apple sometimes issues security-only patches to keep older hardware usable.
  • To avoid future disruptions, install the updates on legacy hardware now, as Apple’s release notes say the certificates support iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation beyond January 2027.
